Why aren’t more people talking about how AI is using a ton of energy and how it will affect global warming in the future? We’re all focusing on things like electric vehicles and heat pumps but the bigger picture is definitely AI and how reliant we’ll be on it in the very near future, so we should be examining how we will manage to generate the vast amount of energy it needs to operate.
I think it’s ridiculous that big companies can get away with being awful towards the environment by offsetting their carbon footprint. So they do a ton of damage but then ‘make it ok’ by planting some trees somewhere. That said, I do find the new green technology that is being introduced absolutely fascinating and I am sure much of it will have a positive effect.
The company I work for has just updated its green credentials and now we all have new rules to follow very strictly in terms of recycling at work, using reusable materials or recyclable ones, minimising waste, turning off lights and monitors, etc etc etc. They’ve told us we will be sanctioned if we fail to follow the new rules, while I agree with environmental efforts it all feels a bit militant to me.
Honestly I think companies, especially the big ones, could and SHOULD do a lot more in terms of the environment. It should start at the government though, they should be forcing these companies to be greener but we all know why they don’t – they’d lose their backhanders! When every day people like me get fined for not recycling at home it really is unacceptable that these big companies get away with so much.
I run a business and we have spent at least 15% of our revenue in the past few years trying to keep up with all the new regulations the government has insisted upon. It is not realistic for small businesses to cover these costs, I have had to lay off 5% of the team to keep up and likely will have to make further redundancies later this year. Of course the government takes no responsibility for any of this!
I think it’s great that these technologies are coming in and businesses are getting greener. We do a lot at home so it’s good that workplaces are improving too. There is so much potential waste and hopefully this can be reduced, which will help the company and also the environment.
My wife works for a technology company who develops a lot of this stuff and she says uptake by governments and big businesses is really slow. She says it’s the small guys that are adopting these new technologies, which shocked me as I know how expensive they are so I don’t know how they can afford it. Perhaps there are fewer hurdles to jump through for decision making, meaning that they can get things like this approved more easily? Either way it should be the big guys and the governments who lead the way and show the example, not the small businesses who are already struggling.
