Nintendo Switch Highlights – Adventures for All Ages
The Nintendo Switch library expands impressively this September with a trio of distinctive titles spanning various genres. From princess-led adventures to virtual workouts with digital pop stars and acrobatic canine platforming, these new game releases demonstrate Nintendo’s commitment to diverse gaming experiences for all ages and interests. These top-rated Switch games are sure to become must-play Switch games for fans of the platform.
The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom – Zelda Takes the Lead
For the first time in the mainline series, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom places Princess Zelda as the playable protagonist rather than Link. Released on 26th September, this top-down adventure presents a fresh perspective on the beloved franchise. Mysterious rifts have appeared throughout Hyrule, swallowing its inhabitants – including Link himself. Consequently, it falls to Zelda to save her kingdom using her wisdom and creativity. This action-adventure game showcases Nintendo’s ability to innovate within established popular gaming franchises.
Partnering with an ethereal fairy named Tri, Zelda wields the magical Tri Rod, which grants her the power to create “echoes” – imitations of objects and monsters found in the environment. These echoes become essential tools for solving puzzles, battling enemies and navigating the vast kingdom. For instance, players can create echoes of water blocks to reach new heights or transform beds into bridges. This mechanic represents one of the most interesting game genre innovations we’ve seen in recent years.
The game features a visual style reminiscent of the 2019 remake of Link’s Awakening, with vibrant, toy-like aesthetics. Furthermore, Zelda can temporarily transform into “Swordfighter form,” allowing her to wield a sword similar to Link’s for limited periods when facing particularly challenging obstacles. As one of the most anticipated Nintendo first-party titles, Echoes of Wisdom is sure to be a hit on the Nintendo eShop.
Fitness Boxing Featuring Hatsune Miku – Fun and Fitness Combined
Having arrived on 5th September, Fitness Boxing featuring Hatsune Miku offers a unique blend of rhythm gaming and exercise. This collaboration brings the iconic virtual pop idol into the established Fitness Boxing formula, creating an engaging workout experience for Nintendo Switch owners. It’s a perfect example of how third-party Switch games can bring fresh experiences to the platform.
The game includes 24 classic Hatsune Miku songs such as “Melt” and “The Vampire,” alongside new special compositions like “Let’s Mikusercise!!” by cosMo@Bousou-P. In fact, with over 30 additional background music tracks from the Fitness Boxing series, this entry boasts the largest song collection in the series to date.
Players can exercise in two primary modes:
- Classic Fitness Boxing Mode with familiar instructors Lin and Evan
- Brand new “Miku Exercise” mode featuring original songs from Piapro Characters
The exercise mechanics involve following on-screen prompts to punch, duck and jab in time with the music while holding Joy-Con controllers. Although the game cannot track lower body movements, it encourages proper stance and weight-shifting for a more effective workout. This innovative approach to fitness gaming could make it one of the top-rated video games in its genre.
Grapple Dogs: Cosmic Canines – Platforming Across the Stars
Completing the Nintendo Switch lineup is Grapple Dogs: Cosmic Canines, a sequel to the critically acclaimed 2D platformer from Medallion Games. This adventure introduces a second playable character, Luna, who joins the returning hero Pablo as they swing, jump and blast through dimensions to save the cosmos. As one of the most promising indie games on Switch, it showcases the platform’s ability to attract diverse and creative titles.
The two protagonists offer distinctive playstyles – Pablo excels at close-range combat, whilst Luna wields firearms and possesses a powerful mid-air dash. Their unique abilities inform level design, with each character having dedicated stages that complement their strengths. This approach to character design adds depth to the gameplay, potentially making it one of the must-play Switch games amidst the September 2024 video game releases for platformer fans.
Notably, Grapple Dogs: Cosmic Canines maintains exceptional variety by introducing new power-ups and mechanics in almost every level. Memorable examples include electricity powers that let players glide across electrical panels and jetpack-style flying in fire-themed worlds. Moreover, stages feature striking visual differences between worlds, with environments ranging from rain-soaked hellscapes to neon-filled futuristic cities.
PlayStation 5 Standouts – Big Names and New Heroes
Sony’s PlayStation 5 continues to build an impressive catalogue with September bringing three standout titles that showcase the console’s capabilities. From family-friendly platforming to intense mythological battles and realistic sports simulation, this month’s offerings cater to diverse gaming preferences.
Astro Bot – Platforming Perfection
The most popular video games of September include Team Asobi’s Astro Bot, released on 6th September. This charming platformer sends players on an extraordinary adventure across more than 50 planets filled with fun, danger and surprises. The game’s premise sees the PS5 mothership wrecked, leaving Astro and his bot crew scattered across the galaxies, creating the perfect setup for a collect-a-thon adventure.
Astro Bot makes exemplary use of the DualSense controller, allowing players to feel every hop, punch and impact through haptic feedback. This technological integration creates an immersive experience as you explore diverse environments from sandy beaches and lush jungles to scorching volcanoes. The game has received exceptional critical acclaim, earning a sparkling 9 out of 10 review from IGN and being hailed as “one of the best platformers ever played” by The Guardian.
Furthermore, Team Asobi has announced free DLC coming this autumn that will add five new online speedrun levels and 10 new Special Bots to rescue, including characters based on games like Helldivers 2 and Stellar Blade. The attention to detail in bot animations, their mannerisms and dance moves fills the game with personality, making it a definitive must-play video game.
God of War Ragnarok (PC) – A New Platform for Kratos
After its successful PlayStation run, God of War Ragnarok arrived on PC on 19th September, bringing Kratos and Atreus’ Norse saga to a new audience. This port offers several technical improvements over its predecessor, primarily through the move from DirectX 11 to DirectX 12, which introduces a shader precompilation step that effectively prevents stutter during gameplay. As one of the most anticipated cross-platform titles, it showcases how popular gaming franchises are increasingly embracing multi-platform releases.
Visually, the port caters wonderfully to PC gamers with support for ultra-wide monitors with aspect ratios up to 32:9, offering a more expansive view of the Nine Realms. The settings menu is particularly praiseworthy, allowing options to be changed in real-time with a transparent background to immediately see the effects of adjustments.
Nevertheless, some technical issues have been reported, specifically with performance on Ryzen 3000 processors and occasional framerate drops. Kotaku noted that some players experienced gradual framerate deterioration during play, though Sony has acknowledged these reports and is investigating solutions.
NBA 2K25 – New Mechanics and Deeper Gameplay
Basketball enthusiasts can enjoy NBA 2K25, which launched on 4th September with significant gameplay enhancements powered by expanded ProPLAY technology. The game introduces:
- An all-new dribble engine, representing the biggest change to the gameplay system in 15 years
- 9,000 new ProPLAY animations, including 1,500 dribbling animations and 1,100 signature shot animations
- Shot Cancelling features that allow players to break out of any advanced shot to transition into other moves
- Customisable Shot Timing Profiles that balance risk versus reward based on player preference
The defensive side sees improvements as well with the new Defensive Movement System, enabling players to better anticipate opponents’ movements and cut off driving lanes. This gives defenders more strategic options when guarding both on-ball handlers and off-ball threats.
As with previous entries in the series, NBA 2K25 offers multiple game modes including MyCAREER, MyTEAM and MyNBA, allowing players to build their legacy across various aspects of professional basketball. The latest video game releases in the sports games genre rarely revolutionise their formulas, but NBA 2K25’s mechanical depth offers genuine advancement for the series.
Xbox and PC Powerhouses – Strategy, Action and More
PC and Xbox gamers have had plenty to celebrate this September with a trio of impressive titles that showcase strategic depth, intense action and immersive world-building. Indeed, the game introduces several innovations to the 4X formula, including a national crafting economy, true simultaneous turn resolution and a non-linear technology tree.
Players can select from dozens of historical leaders, each emphasising different playstyles as they explore dynamic living worlds filled with multiple biomes and cultures. The game’s “True Simultaneous Turns” system means all players’ actions resolve at once, creating suspense and unpredictability rarely seen in turn-based games. Ara: History Untold will be available day one on PC Game Pass, making it accessible to subscribers without additional purchase. This approach to digital game downloads through subscription services is becoming increasingly popular in the industry.

Starfield: Shattered Space – A Focused Expansion
Concluding September’s major releases is Starfield: Shattered Space, which launched on 30th September for PC and Xbox Series X|S. This first major expansion for Bethesda’s space epic takes a more focused approach, concentrating on a single handcrafted planet rather than the vast open universe of the base game.
Players visit the Va’ruun homeworld, exploring 50 new locations whilst navigating political tensions and uncovering the faction’s history. At the same time, new enemies including the Redeemed and Vortex Horrors provide fresh combat challenges. Accordingly, this video game release responds to player feedback by offering a more concentrated, detailed experience compared to the original game’s expansive but sometimes sparse worlds.

Alongside major releases, indie games September 2024 has delivered remarkable creativity and innovation from smaller studios, proving that brilliance comes in all sizes. These titles showcase fresh mechanics, artistic visions and experimental approaches that often push gaming forward in unexpected ways.
The Plucky Squire – A Genre-bending Adventure
Devolver Digital’s The Plucky Squire launched on 17th September across PC, PS5, Switch and Xbox Series X/S, offering one of the most innovative gameplay experiences of the year. This action-adventure follows Jot, a storybook character who discovers a three-dimensional world outside his book’s pages. When the villainous Humgrump kicks Jot out of the story to change his fate, players must navigate between 2D and 3D realms to restore the happy ending.
The game seamlessly transitions between different genres, incorporating platforming, puzzle-solving and minigames that reference classic titles. Its core mechanic involves manipulating words within the storybook to affect the surroundings, often requiring Jot to exit into the 3D world to gather tools before returning to the pages. The striking visual design blends vividly-coloured 2D illustrations with detailed 3D environments, creating a cohesive yet varied aesthetic experience. This innovative approach to gameplay mechanics could make it one of the top-rated video games of the year.
Tiny Glade – Relaxed Creativity
Tiny Glade delivers a uniquely serene building experience where players construct medieval castles, cosy cottages and romantic ruins without pressure or objectives. Released for PC, this diorama builder features a gridless construction system where the game procedurally assembles every brick, pebble and plank according to your designs.
Unlike management games, Tiny Glade has no combat, resource constraints or failure states – just pure creative expression. The game reacts intuitively to player actions; draw a path through a building and a door appears automatically. Environmental details like ivy enveloping structures, wandering sheep and fireflies at night create a living, breathing world around your creations. This relaxing approach to gameplay represents one of the most interesting game genre innovations we’ve seen in recent years.
Greedfall 2 – Early Access Exploration
Spiders’ early access title Greedfall 2: The Dying World launched on 24th September exclusively on Steam. This sequel to the cult-classic RPG takes players to the old continent as a native of Teer Fradee, with approximately 30% of the final game available at this stage. As one of the most anticipated RPGs of the year, it’s generating significant buzz among fans of the genre.
The initial Early Access release includes character creation, the beginning of the main quest, six companions and exploration of three regions: Teer Fradee, Thynia and Uxantis. Priced at £31.76 (which will increase for the full release), the developers have outlined an ambitious roadmap featuring additional companions, new regions, crafting systems and faction quests. Despite being incomplete, this early version demonstrates considerable potential for RPG enthusiasts seeking deep, narrative-driven experiences.
What September 2024 Tells Us About the Future of Gaming
Looking at September 2024 video game releases holistically reveals significant patterns that hint at where the gaming industry is heading. Examining this month’s launches provides valuable insights into emerging gaming industry trendsthat will likely shape gaming’s landscape in the coming years.
Rise of Remasters and Reboots
First and foremost, the prominence of remasters and remakes continues to grow. September’s lineup features several revitalised classics like Age of Mythology: Retold and Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics. This aligns with industry data showing that between March and June 2023, remakes and remasters accounted for 9 of the 10 top-rated games and 3 of the top 10 game releases. In essence, these offerings represent more than nostalgia grabs – they’re critical to preserving older titles for modern systems, as many classics become inaccessible due to outdated hardware. The success of these remastered games demonstrates the enduring appeal of beloved franchises.
Indie Innovation Leading the Way
Indie games September 2024 demonstrate how smaller studios continue driving creative innovation. Games like The Plucky Squire and Tiny Glade showcase experimental gameplay mechanics that major publishers often adopt later. This reflects how indie developers have the freedom to explore unique ideas without corporate constraints, introducing groundbreaking concepts that influence the entire industry. To clarify, these smaller teams aren’t simply creating niche experiences – they’re increasingly setting trends that AAA developers follow, particularly in storytelling approaches and genre experimentation.
Cross-platform Releases Becoming the Norm
The gaming calendar 2024 reveals another clear trend – simultaneous releases across multiple platforms have become standard practice. Most highly anticipated games now launch concurrently on several systems, with games like Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 arriving simultaneously on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Previously, platform exclusivity periods were common, yet the industry increasingly recognises that video game enthusiasts across all platforms deserve access to must-play video games without arbitrary waiting periods. Even traditionally exclusive franchises like God of War have embraced PC releases, signalling a more inclusive approach to gaming distribution.
September 2024 Video Game Releases – The Cream of the Crop
After examining over 60 video game releases September 2024, certain titles stand above the rest as exceptional gaming experiences. These represent the absolute cream of the crop across all platforms, demonstrating technical excellence, creative innovation and exceptional gameplay.
From PlayStation’s lineup, Astro Bot emerges as perhaps the most critically acclaimed video game release of the month. With its perfect blend of nostalgic PlayStation references and cutting-edge platforming mechanics, it has secured numerous perfect scores from major publications. Ultimately, its combination of accessibility and depth makes it the rare title that appeals to both casual players and hardcore enthusiasts alike.
For Nintendo Switch games fans, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom represents a landmark moment in the franchise. By placing Zelda in the protagonist role after decades of rescuing, the game offers a fresh perspective on the beloved series whilst maintaining the puzzle-solving and exploration elements that define Zelda games. Its innovative echo-creation mechanic essentially transforms how players interact with the game world. As one of the most anticipated upcoming Switch titles, it’s sure to be a hit among fans of single-player Switch games amongst the September 2024 video game releases.
On PC and Xbox, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 delivers the best video game experience for action fans. The title’s technical achievement in rendering hundreds of enemies simultaneously creates battles of unprecedented scale, making players genuinely feel like superhuman Space Marines. Subsequently, its cooperative gameplay options extend replayability substantially beyond the campaign, making it an excellent choice for those who enjoy multiplayer Switch games as well.
The indie scene is predominantly represented by The Plucky Squire, whose dimension-shifting gameplay between 2D and 3D worlds markedly stands out as one of the most innovative mechanical concepts in recent years. Its visual charm and genre-blending approach create an experience unlike anything else in the gaming calendar 2024.
Altogether, September has delivered an extraordinary month for video game enthusiasts across all platforms, with each system receiving multiple must-play video games that showcase the medium’s technical capabilities and creative potential. From AAA game launches to innovative indie game releases, this month has set a high bar for what could be some of the best video games of 2024.

Ok maybe I am a saddo but I bought a Nintendo Switch just so I could play The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom and I absolutely LOVE it! I haven’t been able to stop playing for weeks now, it’s such a great game. Once I get bored with it, which I think will take a LONG time, I will definitely be giving Grapple Dogs: Cosmic Canines a go based on your recommendation 🙂
The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is a wonderful game, I think it’s designed beautifully and has so many interesting aspects to it. It keeps me occupied and I have replayed it so many times. It has to be one of my favourite games ever, the fact it’s so portable being on the Switch makes it all the better.
Don’t laugh but I’ve really got into Fitness Boxing Featuring Hatsune Miku! I use it every morning before work and sometimes do a routine in the evenings too. I find it so much fun and really motivating too. Who knew a game would help build my fitness?
Some real gems amongst these titles, it’s too hard to pick a favourite! I think this must have been one of the strongest months of the year, there are so many great games here. Bring on October!
I have only recently got into gaming but was hooked by Call of Duty! My friend plays it all the time so I finally decided to bite the bullet (pun intended) and give it a go myself to see what all the fuss was about. Well, I have barely been able to stop playing since then. Gaming is so cool and there are so many friendly online communities too so it’s a great way to be social if your not naturally inclined that way.
Having played various iterations of Zelda for several decades, I wasn’t sure that The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom would be different enough for me to enjoy but I was so wrong. It is absolutely brilliant and I have been hypnotised by it since the first play. Absolute classic game, another smash from the Zelda franchise.
My sister in law and I both play Fitness Boxing Featuring Hatsune Miku at the same time. We do a video call and work through the exercises together. It is a great way for us to stay active and the fact we do it together means we can motivate one another even though we’re miles apart.
I’ve always wanted a dog but sadly I am allergic so have resigned myself to never being able to own one and instead admire them from afar. I’ve found I’ve been able to do so by playing Grapple Dogs: Cosmic Canines on the daily, it is so much fun and the dog characters are the cutest! So although I can’t have a dog irl I can have lots of them when gaming instead! Sounds pretty stupid now I’ve written it down but it works for me so who cares!!
What a total masterpiece God of War Ragnarok is, it is gaming perfection in my eyes! So immersive and with so many gameplay options too. I wasn’t sure if it would be my thing but I am so glad I gave it a try. I hope they bring out several sequels as there is so much more they could do with the storyline.
I work night shifts and it’s pretty quiet for much of the time so sometimes we play games in between our various tasks. Our current favourite is Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, as it can be multiplayer so it is perfect for our work team. Just don’t tell the boss, haha
