  1. When I was a kid I did a lot of clubs and activities outside of school and I loved it! It really helped me work out what my interests were, which then later helped me figure out what would be best for me to study at university. I ended up doing law, which would never have occurred to me had I not taken part in clubs related to this field.

My parents were always super keen for me to do as many out of school clubs as possible, I was a pretty hyper kid and I guess they were grateful when someone else was taking care of me so they had a break! I remember I tried a lot of different things but didn’t stick with many. The few exceptions were sports, especially football, and science. I loved being active so sports were a given, and my brain really enjoyed the satisfaction of understanding how and why things work so science was perfect for me. I majored in science for my degree and am about to start a PhD so those clubs really helped pique my interest so I totally agree that they are so important and valuable.

I actually own a business running after school clubs. We mainly focus on Maths and foreign languages but due to popular demand we are also branching out into history and science. These sessions are so worthwhile for kids, yes they learn a lot in class but our groups are typically only 10-15 kids so the session leaders can work 1:1 a lot more than teachers can so kids get more specialised support. Our groups are great for building confidence and curiosity as well as subject knowledge.

  4. I really want my son to do some of these clubs but as a single parent my finances are already super stretched so I just can’t afford it. However your article has some great advice about getting support to help pay for such things so I am going to look into this and hopefully my son can take up some new interests soon.
